July 19, 2004

I took subway, and a few trolleys and buses, to get to where my mama and I used to live in 1986-87. It's not too far from Moscow's center and pretty close to the Moscow State University (though if you come from a smaller place, it'd feel like the end of the world; it does take a while to get used to Moscow's size).

This was the first time in 17 years that I actually took a walk here; I had passed the area in a car once or twice - but never felt like doing a more thorough re-exploration. I've no idea why; it turned out to be such an interesting walk that now I'm actually surprised that I hadn't come here once during my most recent time in Moscow, a year and a half in 2001-02. Must be because I'm lazy.

Basically, the most exciting part of it is that so much has changed and so much hasn't, and I still have tons of memories from when I was 12 and 13...

#1 and #2 - I can't remember if these monuments - to Mahatma Gandhi and Indira Gandhi - existed when I lived here.

#3 - but this square- Jawaharlal Nehru Square!!! - with a university-affiliated hotel in the middle of it, hasn't really changed - not when you're looking at it from across the street, at least, and manage to ignore all the construction going on nearby.

#4 - the weird-looking new residential buildings somewhere on or around Ulitsa Mosfilmovskaya, where I went to school.
