St. Pete--Neighbors

One of our neighbors is learning to play a clarinet. Normally, she does it around or after midnight, but it's not a problem since the only way we can hear it is when we step outside to smoke. Her clarinet sounds like a breed of an elephant and a soccer fan trying to produce a classical tune. She is getting better, though. Overall, it's very poignant. She also plays chess, studies Finnish and Ancient Greek, knows German, skis and has a cute, very emotional dog who cries heartbreakingly when left alone at night.

Our other neighbors have just acquired an exercise machine, and since it's too big to fit into any of their rooms, they keep it on the staircase. I'm welcome to use it, too, but I've tried once and found it quite challenging. These neighbors have a beautiful cat who likes to sit on the windowsill and stare at me. When I finally met the cat in person for the first time, she didn't run away but treated me like part of her family - and the neighbors were totally surprised, because she's not the friendliest cat in the world, but I explained that I'm not a stranger to her.

We have brought out an old carpet and set up a smoking area recently. Our neighbors' son is welcome to sit and smoke there, too. The area turns into my office pretty often - I've even managed to get an internet connection there.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention that the building we all live in was built at the end of the 18th century. Only God knows who lived here before us.
